The initial inspiration for my project was motivated by my old
perfume bottles. I plan to break up the glass and heat it an a
kiln, shaping it with powdered glass. I wanted to provide a deeper
meaning to the materials and work I was creating through the
juxtaposition of sharp glass and delicate silk. This theme
permeated through my idea progression, culminating in the idea of
creating a glass knuckle duster. The knuckle duster represents
violence and pain, but the glass is fragile and so could never be
used for brutality.
There are many advantages and disadvantages to working with
recycled materials. A lot of the disadvantages are stigma, such as
having a previous user, of producing inconsistent results, but
these can also be an advantage. Vintage is very 'in vogue', it can
be satisfying to know that materials are not being wasted and the
end result can be quirky.
